JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?
Choose an image format for the destination and the picture itself. A photo, a screenshot with small text and a transparent logo have different needs. The smallest file is useful only if the receiving app accepts it and the image still looks right.
PNG to WebP →JPG: photographs and upload forms
JPG and JPEG are extensions for the same format. JPEG is useful for photographs when adjustable file size matters. It uses lossy encoding and cannot store a transparent background.
When converting a transparent PNG, choose the background color before export. Picvelio offers white, black or a custom color. Check edges against that color; fine text and flat artwork may look better in PNG.
PNG to JPG →PNG: crisp graphics and transparent editing copies
PNG stores the rendered pixels losslessly and supports transparency, which is useful for screenshots, diagrams and logos. A photograph exported as PNG may be much larger than its JPEG or WebP source.
Converting a lossy WebP or JPG to PNG does not restore missing detail. It also does not make an opaque image transparent or remove its background. Picvelio preserves decoded pixels through a browser canvas; it is not a byte-for-byte archival conversion.

Start with the same original and keep the output dimensions equal. Export a candidate, inspect small text and edges at 100% zoom, and compare actual byte sizes. Quality 80 in one encoder is not a guarantee of the same appearance or size in another.
Keep your master copy and make delivery copies from it. Repeated lossy conversions can accumulate damage. Picvelio does not copy original EXIF or GPS metadata when it renders a new file; color profiles and other metadata may also change. Use an archival workflow if those must be preserved.
